...Market Forces Alone Are Insufficient
Thanks to responsible leaders, scientists and activists, more attention is being paid to developing cleaner fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the planet. The problem is so great and the benefits of arriving at practical solutions are so obvious, but it requires a major effort by responsible leaders and cooperation between the public and private sectors.
Relying just on market forces or the profit motive to arrive at mutually beneficial solutions is not sufficient, however, and given past experience, will not bring about substantial changes in national energy policy. We do not have to dig very deep in our history to find numerous cases in which corporations, acting out of self-interest, pursued policies which were detrimental to the public good or supported public policies which were impractical or served particular interests at the expense of the common good. The transportation and energy sectors, unfortunately, are prime examples. - DAW
